The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt -DLR) in Stuttgart, with further research facilities in Cologne, Ulm, Oldenburg and Hamburg, does research in the field of efficient energy storage systems that conserve natural resources, and next generation energy conversion technologies with a staff of 180 scientific and technical employees, engineers and doctoral candidates.

The Institute of Flight Systems (FT) is active in the topics of flight mechanics and measurement and system technology of all flying systems at the DLR site Braunschweig since 1953. The institute has 5 departments with a total of about 170 employees. Several large facilities are available for research.

The Institute of Networked Energy Systems in Oldenburg develops technologies and concepts for future energy supply based on renewable energy sources. The major challenge is how to form stable and efficient energy systems from weather-dependent decentralised production units. The research for this transformation is considering the aspects “defossilation”, “decentralisation” and “digitalisation”.
